![]() ![]() And my, are those consequences jaw-droppers. There are excellently written (and acted) characters and a huge and complex political ecosystem where every decision they make has unexpected consequences. ![]() Like Game of Thrones and other terrific shows in the genre, The Expanse is also bigger than the sum of its parts. ![]() ![]() But that complexity is what gives it such vivid life, and vastly deepens the rewatch value. Ever since I first gave the space opera a chance back during its first season, I have been utterly hooked. The Expanse is one of those shows that’s almost a little confusing on first contact - there are so many factions and characters that it can be hard to keep your run-of-the-mill Belters straight from your OPA thugs and your Martian marines. The reasons for the Game of Thrones comparison are pretty straightforward. Whenever someone gripes to me about how much they miss Game of Thrones, there’s always one question that shoots immediately out of my mouth, like a torpedo fired from a Martian warship, primed to destroy their misconception that no other show could be on par with HBO’s mega-hit. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Response by Philip Nord, Princeton University.Compte-rendu par Lucette Valensi, EHESS, Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales.Review by Maurice Samuels, Yale University.Review by Vicki Caron, Cornell University.Review by Julian Bourg, Boston College.8 February 2021 | Įditor: Diane Labrosse | Commissioning Editor and Chair: Carolyn J. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2020. After the Deportation: Memory Battles in Postwar France. Although he does not question the turning points of this narrative, including the Gaullist myth of the Resistance, the 1961 Eichmann trial in Jerusalem, and the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, he treats them as important but insufficient explanations for the ‘repression’ or emergence of Holocaust memory in France. The student rebels of 1968 unearthed long-repressed memories about Jewish persecution and the Vichy regime that had been buried by both Gaullist and Communist accounts of French heroic martyrdom, and the earlier celebration of Resistance gave way to an emphasis on Jewish suffering. As the story goes, the French imagined deportees as anti-fascist, patriotic victims of the Nazi regime until the 1960s and 70s, when a younger generation questioned French complicity in the Holocaust along with French racism and colonialism. It revises the dominant silence-to-voice story that historians have nuanced and contested, but never fully dislodged. Philip Nord’s After the Deportation is a compelling and ambitious account of ‘deportation memory’ in France. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Kelton’s argument rests on these key principles: Kelton advocates a more holistic view of the economy-arguing that we ought to focus on poverty reduction, combating climate change, and building a more just and equitable society as the true measures of economic success, rather than focusing solely on the narrow budgetary impacts of legislation. government could finance any program it wishes to create. This idea of the federal government as a currency issuer instead of a currency user is central to The Deficit Myth, in which Kelton champions more aggressive deficit spending by arguing that the U.S. dollars, it can simply create them anytime it needs more dollars to pay for something. Because the government is the sole supplier of U.S. federal government as “needing” money to pay for its spending.
